News of wars, earthquakes, Nihilist ferocity, &c., the wreck of matter, and the crash of worlds, were passed over as of small moment; but when the Dude found in the yachting column that his cutter “ Daisie ” had won a cup, we were all delighted, and her pleased owner had to stand a bottle of “ the boy.” Noblesse oblige. When we had finished this drink, or thank-offering, we pulled off to the yacht, and told the Commodore of the fishing permission. Of course he was instantly impatient to start, and his “Come away! come away!” was heard all through the vessel. When we pulled to the rocky mouth of the Creede, the salmon were leaping around us, but our hopes of good sport were dashed when we saw how low and clear the stream was. It sadly wanted rain to bring it into good ply. But the scenery was beautiful, and almost made up for the light basket. We fished, and all got something, but nothing above two-and-a-half pounds, though we could see some big ones rolling in the shallow pools. I raised a good one twice, but I did’nt hook it. It did, and I saw its face no more. The keeper said, “Worm never take here,” so, just for aggravation and “divilment,” the Historian took off his fly and put on a worm, to be instantly rewarded by hooking and killing the best trout of the day—much to the chagrin of the oracular keeper. We found when we returned for dinner that the Twins had tried trolling the minnow among the leaping fish at the mouth of the river, but without success. Of course the usual fish stories were told of
