26 celand in tl?e Sunday, July 18, 1886. “ Commences with calm, thick weather; engines slowed, having run our distance; made the Faroe Islands abeam, and at 6.20 a.m. came to anchor off Thorshavn. From first making the land we had great difficulty in picking out Naals-oe. Very fine all day; lots of visitors aboard.” BOUT 2 a.m. I was wakened by the engines slowing, and found that we were near the Faroe Islands. We had great difficulty in sighting the land, and must have passed the Great Diamond, an island like the Bass Rock, in the fog, between Sand-oe and Suder-oe. Suder-oe was the first land we made, and when the light came we slowly steamed into Thorshavn. The sea was calmed a bit, and the land prospect was very fine and craggy; some islands steep like Ailsa Craig, others sloping, with green terraces on one side and steep cliffs on the other, as if tilted from a level toan inclined position. I had only mypyjamahs on, and could not face the elements long in such airy garb, so turned in. “ I must slumber again,” like the much-abused sluggard of the rhyme. This morning we had our refreshing tub, and the smooth sea revived the invalids. When we got on deck, clothed in our right minds, the yacht was just anchoring at Thorshavn, and we had a glimpse of the queer wee town through our binoculars. Chief-officer Hebb told me that it had been quite light all night, with slight signs of fog, but no light except binnacle lamps had been needed all night. We sat once more round the breakfast table, and felt thankful. Our promenade and smoke after were delicious, with fine weather and the novel scene around us to make the invalids forget their past misery. Thorshavn is a very odd little town, with turf-covered houses, and a
