The deep boom of our steam whistle followed the getting of the anchor, and warned vagrant fishing boats to keep clear, as “ Mohican” slowly gathered way out of the harbour. It was 8.15 a.m. when we started for Loch Laxford, about a n.e. course. “ Up in the morning early,” “ brushing the dew from off the upland lawn,” &c., is seldom a success in our raw climate, despite the poet’s opposing views, yet those who rose this morning had their reward. We could see the dim line of Scottish hills, with the various Bens and Stacks standing up through the lazy, trailing mist. The rain ceased and the sea fell to a long gentle swell, which did not “ sickly o’er with the pale cast ” of indisposition even our weakest invalid. After breakfast the sun came out, as Hisop describes in his fable, and conquered us so that we were fain to cast our cloaks and seek “sequestrated nooks” (Mrs. Malaprop’s method of spelling) with books and pipes. No laziness, however, for the Commodore and the veteran fisher. They began to arrange casts, soak gut, and generally to set the battle in array against the scaly grilse we hoped to get in Laxford. K. got out the rook rifles and tempted the Historian into a trial of skill against the luckless “dookers” which were purring and wailing around the yacht. Don’t weep for the poor, innocent, dumb animals, dear reader, for we couldn’t hit any; only wasted cartridges, and hurried them up a little by near shots. Some sketching, some photographing, helped to pass an idle hour, and the Stack of Laxford grew higher and higher, until at last the red point (Rhu Ruag), the
