We noticed the boats here were slightly different in shape from the Norwegian or Danish boats, being more like the Eskimo kayak, but of wood instead of skins. We could see the snow-capped mountains all round, with long stretches of lava and dried mud between. When I say we, I mean some of us, as the Baby and the G.O.M., like the fat boy in “Pickwick” had “gone to sleep again,” and dreamt perchance of their loved ones at home, who knows? A shot from Romulus waked the couple with a start and the slightest suspicion of a “ big, big D,” which caused the Twin to miss the duck ; at least he blamed the miss on that. He hit some, however, and gradually filled the bag with ducks and sundries. When the creek (marked “Leer inlet” on the chart) was reached, the dingy and nets were taken in charge by Captain Timpson and Josephus, with old John as first mate, and we tried a few splashes and hauls without success. We soon found we had entered a bight or false mouth of the river, so the dingy was poled across the shallows and our first haul showed we were among fish, as we netted five grilse and several trout. Splashing in bright daylight was a novelty, and not what we were accustomed to. The Commodore and K. saw us afar off, and left the launch to join us. K. put up his rod and went up the river to try a cast in the sea pools. Romulus had shot away all his cartridges, so he hobbled along the loose shingle to see the fun. His leg was an object of anxiety to us all, and if Sir Joseph Lister had seen him capering along that beach he would have frowned. The Historian felt his heart in his mouth at every shuffle cut by the “patient,” but fortunately the leg stood the test well. N
