96 Ice land in tolji ican. fishing so ably conducted by the Commodore, at Faroe, on the Sunday previous ; but he said, “Cod-fishing is one thing, and card- playing is another!”—a statement which could not be disputed, though argumentatively weak. So, like a fashionable wedding announcement, “No cards” was the order of the day. Sleeping was the only thing we could lay our minds to; but at night, like the stars, we came out blinking from our obscurity, one by one, and joined in a medicinal jorum of hot toddy. The “sederunt” was short, as most of us had feelings too deep for tears, and hearts nearer our mouths than was anatomically correct. The Commodore benignly advised the Dromios to take some mustard and hot water; judging by the paleness of those cheeks, that “if it were done, when ’tis done, then ’twere well it were done quickly,” and the young men went away exceeding sorrowful. Most of the tales to-night were of illness. Perhaps our feelings suggested the grimness of the facetice. Some would not print well, but the following forced a cadaverous smile from us :—A very old and feeble man was seriously ill, and the minister visited him, to talk with him. After he left a friend called, and said, “ Well, John, and how are you ? ” The woollen night-cap was raised, and the poor, toothless old chap scratched his head in a querulous way, and gave this droll answer in his high-quavering voice—“ Dod, man, the meenister’s been here, an’ I’m tae ha’e na chance at a’, as far as I can see; for if a gang abin, I’ve nae vice tae sing, an’ I canna play the herp for ma rheumatism ; an’ if I gang ablow, I’ve nae teeth tae gnash! ” Mr. Hebb and his crew had had the deck to themselves from morn till night, and we hope our solemnity and seclusion were put
