Fishing in a stream always has a fascination for any angler with a spice of poetry in him. The mere fishing is nothing, but the wonderful variety of the surroundings, the constant glitter and change in the running water, and the fairy nooks that come before the angling explorer’s gaze, are verily a “joy for ever.” P'ishing in a loch has its pleasures distinct of their kind, but more commonplace and tame when compared with stream fishing. The rush and subdued roar of a salmon water in good ply make the ears tingle with the mellow, hissing sound. The angler, in a brown study, with his fragrant pipe sending blue rings of smoke up through the nodding hazels, his eyes fixed on the foam-flecked river, but seeing only the images his fancy has called up, often starts and looks around, thinking he hears a friendly shout. It is the snapping of a twig, and the ventriloquism of the river has deceived him. Or he may be sitting “resting” a salmon before trying him again with a fresh fly, and hears nothing but the hissing rapids, when a friend’s hand touches him and says, “Wake up, old man, I’ve been shouting for twenty minutes,” and all the time the fisher thought solitude was round him. Thus do the pixies of the “wimplin’ burn” bewitch the fisher.
