^0 Iceiand in tt?e bomcan. 7 It is easy to ask sufficient people to fill the state-rooms of the yacht, but it is quite an art to assort the lot so well that each man helps to make the whole a pleasant party. The destination is but a small matter, as, after all, the party themselves make or mar the enjoyment. They cannot look at scenery all the time, but depend on the fun and amusement going on aboard to keep them from feeling the passage too long. A discontented member can spoil a lot of enjoyment. In this, as in everything else, happiness comes from within and not from without. Now, the Commodore, from long and dire experience, has learnt how to gather such a select flock around him, so that a “ stag ” party in “ Mohican ” care not a jot whether the arctic sea or the equator be the goal; the trip is only a peg to hang some happy days on—only an excuse for throwing aside the stick-up collar of civilisation for the flannel shirt of freedom, and a sure addition to the experience of any man fond of sport. Of course small matters become great at sea, as the world for the time is reduced to the size of the vessel; so this log, like other logs, is really but a “Chronic- ling of small beer,” as Shakespeare says ; but he also says, “’Tis ever common that men are merriest when they are from home.” So events that look trivial in a printed page are often the cause of much enjoyment at the time of their happening, from their accompaniment of sea air, bright health, and good fellows around. It is curious to note the dress of such a company. Gradually, as the vessel gets further and further from home, the costume becomes more and more simple; a new scarf or a white shirt front become objects of intense interest. The pyjamah promenaders wax bolder in their morning exercise, and the group on deck in the early morning
