io Icelanc in tbe o\)\ ican. i§ The Commodore’s credit is especially bad, as he won’t pay except under great pressure. We got out the rifles and had some practice; but Captain Timpson advised strict economy in cartridges, in view of the lions and tigers, and other wild fowl, he promised us in Iceland. Heavy showers passed at intervals, and added to the splendid beauty of the hills as we neared Isle Oronsay. The entrances to the lochs were looking their best in sun and shadow, ruddy and green like a sublime tartan. If the world of tourists knew the Western Highlands, they would desert the Continent for its tameness and crowd to Scotland. But, perhaps, the weakness of the average Cook’s personally-conducted stomach prevents it trusting itself on the rough billows of the Minch, and the views on shore lack much of the grandeur we see from the yacht. Through Kyle Rhea with a roaring tide that foamed along the rocks and boiled around the vessel. A poor coaster, left high on the beach by the last tide, looked forlorn and ludicrous perched at an angle, almost roosting, one might say, on a high rock. The crew gazed enviously at us as “ Mohican” flew past. “ He must have caught an eddy and gone ashore,” says K. C. “When he stuck he must have felt like a neddy,” says Remus. “ I hate those prem-eddy-tated jokes,” drawled the American cousin. And so this disgraceful levity goes on when all around is magnificent scenery, rich with old associations of savage times. Kyle Akin (Haco’s passage) is reached, where a lot of fishing craft are waiting for the southerly tide to help them through the narrow Kyles. Queer to think of Haco’s time, with his fair-haired sailor warriors in their light galleys, and now, when a vessel like “ Mohican,” built for pleasure only, sails the same waters. Yet men speak of the good old times! Poor Haco doubtless died without ever having tasted a gin D*
