Iceland in \\)t °b ican. 19 electric light of that saloon. Some old college tales seemed to suit the audience. Poor Henry, an old friend of mine, has been the cause of many a laugh in many a company. Many a story is told about poor old Henry. He was stout, old, and nervous, and yet liked to be in all the fun of the fair with the budding medicals. We had all been into the Athole Arms at a roaring medical supper once, and were evicted into Dundas Street about midnight, or after. One athletic youth climbed a lamp to light his cigar, and turned out the gas. Instantly a police whistle was heard at the foot of the hill, which is steep. Poor Henry lost his head and ran up the street like a deer. We instantly shouted “ Stop thief,” and the poor old boy ran into the arms of a Heeland constable at the top of the hill. He was breathless, and protested in gasps his innocence, saying his friends would put it all right when they came up. Although he was quite sober, the policeman held him “tight” till we arrived. Henry grinned with satisfaction and conscious innocence. “ Dis any man of you know this pershan?” asks the Celtic “ Boy in Blue.” Our ringleader, an inveterate joker (now a respected family physician), looked at Henry critically, and then said, severely, “ We never saw him before in our lives ; off to the office with him.” Poor nervous Henry’s face was a study, and we had soon to explain the matter, or he would have broken down. When we got near the station a half-crown enabled the policeman to see the joke, and he was let off; but he begged us never to divulge his sad position. Some of the old days we had at college, and walking the hospital, will never leave my memory. The old racketty, talented, eccentric clique is broken up and spread over the world— “Some have reached a better country, far away, far away,”
