When some of the women were taken aboard for a short run round the cove they were delighted. The children are healthy little beings, in comfortable woollen clothes and wooden pattens—just miniature men and women. The houses are of planks, dropped anywhere, and their green-growing grass-turf roofs gave them a curious underground look, like mounds in a meadow. The smells of decomposing fish and oils are awful. Every house has cod-fish hanging in rows outside, sometimes strips of shark-flesh; and more rarely are seen the jaw-bones and vertebrse of whales lying about.
