The “Government” (as a Palermo guide once called our kind host) and the G.O.M., when strolling ashore, were met by the Lutheran priest, who took them into his simple and clean little house, and treated them to his best—frugal fare; but his hospitality and politeness were perfect, and they enjoyed it, though he could speak but little English. Milk, bread, cheese, and a little sour wine, that was all; but “small cheer and great welcome make a merry feast,” as we find in the “Comedy of Errors.” Living is cheap here. A carpenter gets four shillings per week. A family of five live comfortably on £20 per annum. Captain Timpson thinks when he retires he will come here and “coil up.” “ Passing rich on £^0 a year ” is no poet’s fancy here, but a reality. Sometimes a stroke of fortune brings a school of whales into the bay, and then the boats gather in haste from all parts, and drive the huge brutes ashore. As many as 900 have been thus slaughtered and cut up for oil, and often 400 or 500. The broad bay is dyed with blood, making reality of Shakespeare’s horrid description—“The multitudinous seas incarnadined, making the green one red.” There are no paupers here. Each family has a plot of ground from the State, on which his hut is built; there are no landlords, and the pasturage for their sheep is common. A fish-manure factory is just being built. In the school we heard the little boys reciting small pieces of English poetry for our benefit, of which they and the “ Dominie ” were very proud. Sunday afternoon is their enjoyment time, which proves that they have more sense in some things than we Calvinistic Scotch.
