The Commodore looked more comfortable in his light tweeds, but we all felt the heat pretty bad. Still the guide kept wagging his legs, and the ponies followed him. We had been told the road was four miles, and when an hour had gone we sighted a river. The guide stopped and motioned us to dismount, when our ponies were turned loose. We thought we had arrived, and the Commodore began to put up his rod, but he was solemnly stopped by our native friend, who waved his hand and said, “Von half.” We consulted as to what this meant. Nothing more explicit could be got out of the guide. He was like the Sphinx, or the Delphic Oracle, or any other irritating, unsatisfactory, played-out mystery. Either he meant half way, or half a mile, or a “half-one.” The last reading of the mystic words came from the Historian. Perhaps the wish was father to the thought. Anyway, they all supported this rendering, and a little water from the river was annexed to make the “solution” perfect. The debate was adjourned, and we lay on the sandy banks smoking a pleasant cigar in the sun. Soon the guide began to heap the boxes and baskets on the led pony, and we had to mount again. The path took us up the steep river bank and round the sandy slopes on to a plain of volcanic mud, with no vegetation except a few pink and white flowers among the black stones. No living thing could we see. Not a green thing was in sight, except the Historian himself; but some curlews circled about,
