We waited in silence, and hungry and thirsty, until the launch came ashore to take off our remains, also the corpses of the fish we had killed ; and never did men more thankfully climb the gangway of a well-conducted vessel. The devoted band refreshed themselves, some with Andrew’s finest mixture of cocktail, some with the plain “auld kirk.” I felt like crying— “ You may lay me in my bed, mother—my head is throbbing sore; And, mother, prithee, let the sheets be duly aired before; And if you’d do a kindness to your poor desponding child, Draw me a pot of beer, mother, and please to draw it mild.” But I was so thirsty that I could not waste time spouting the well- known Bon Gaultier rhymes. I only thought them, and thankfully plunged my “drooper” into a tankard. Never were we more grateful for a tub and fresh clothes—the glorious perfume from Alec’s pea-soup hastening our toilets; and never did we sit down more grateful for our mercies than that night, at the fashionable hour of 11 p.m. Knife and fork prevented conversation by monopolising our attention during the meal ; and afterwards, the charms of poker, “jack- pots,” and “full hands” could not keep our heavy eyelids up. Soon we were in bed, dreaming of lava precipices, where ponies with flasks in their fins leapt at salmon flies which always broke, and other nightmares. These Danish miles are an awful swindle. Zoega^told us “ rather less than five miles,” but as these took us about six hours’ riding, we guessed twenty-five was a more exact estimate, and from sixty to seventy by our feelings.
