OUR LAST DAY AT REYKJAVIK. 8i hitherto been in. The doctor summoned his house- keeper (for somehow or another he has contrived to resist the seductions of the youth and beauty of Reyk- javik, and is still a bachelor), and a tray appeared with a bottle of champagne and some rather sweet cakes, which he pressed upon us. The sun was over the meridian, so we had no scruples about drinking, and we toasted our host out of old-fashioned long glasses which nearly dislocated our necks to empty them. But we were not to be let off with this. We must positively taste the mineral water from the doctor’s favourite springs, about sixteen miles off. Some of the company wanted to go then on account of urgent business, but fresh tumblers were brought, and we had to take a mouthful each. Although it had been corked up for eight months it had no crust nor any “ bottle flavour ” to speak of, and tasted somewhat like a very mild apolli- naris without any sparkle. Our host was great upon the advantages, both to the public of Europe and to Iceland, which would result from the establishment of a spa and kursaal upon the German principle on the site of the springs, but there were incredulous ones who, in view of the dearth of Scotch whiskey in the land, doubted whether the pleasure of drinking this water would not be rather dearly purchased by a journey almost to the Arctic circle. However, we thought the idea an excellent one. The kind old fellow told us of all sorts of places far more wonderful than the Geysers, to which he would have liked to have escorted us, and was evidently loth to part from us, but time was up.
