THE GEYSER FIELD. 55 nace ashes, while the rock, that everywhere sticks up through it, scales and crumbles away ;—a dreary, waste, scorched, and parboiled field, with tufts of grass and weeds struggling through its cindery soil. All over it are holes of various sizes, out of which jets of boiling water and clouds of steam are issuing. Sometimes these Geyserkins sink down, and for a while are subdued and lamb-like. Then they seem to work themselves up into a passion, and bubble and spit and fume most viciously. About the middle of the field one suddenly stumbles upon a hole about the size of an ordinary well, out of which a little cloud of steam is gently rising. The mouth of the well is crusted round with lime and mag- nesia salts, and it has a sort of raised lip, so that you can without fear advance and look down it. The Broth-pot of Hades!—twelve or fifteen feet below us a boiling, seething, bubbling caldron. One draws back, thinking what an appalling thing it would be to topple in. This is Strokr the Churn. He hardly ever spouts of his own accord, but remains quietly simmering till irritated by having two or three barrow loads of turf pitched into him. This chokes, him, and he vomits it up with expressions of deep indignation. At the top of the sloping field are two lovely pools full to the brim with crystal-clear hot water, not boiling, but placid, and giving off a light steam cloud. They are irregular in shape, and lined with a white incrustation, looking like cavern pools. They lie close together, and the upper one quietly runs over into the lower, which again brims over and forms a little steamy rivulet which trickles down to the great Geyser. They have undermined the ground, and, as you stand at their brink, a passing fear may come over you
