How his little pony’s back did’nt break in sunder beneath his ponderous weight was a marvel. One of the ship’s cooks, Joseph (Mr Holt’s servant), and six guides had gone before us in the morning with the baggage and spare horses, so that the company all told consisted of about four-and-twenty people, with over sixty ponies. We sallied forth from the town, passing a tall watch-tower, which commands a view of the whole bay and of the inland country for a long distance. For a while we had a very fair road (the only one in the island), but soon it dwindled down into a mere bridle path, only broad enough at intervals to allow two to ride abreast with comfort. It was a fine bright morning, and the scenery during the first part of the day interested us very much as we slowly penetrated landwards towards the mountains, which for the last couple of days we had been surveying from the yacht’s deck. To our left we now and then caught a glimpse of the arms of the Faxa Bugt, with the blue waters sparkling in the morning sun. On our right were fine ranges of mountains, up among which an attempt is being made to work up sulphur. Should the project succeed it will be a valuable addition to the exports of the island; but, as far as we could learn, it had not as yet turned out a great find. When we started we were a compact body of cavalry; but as the hours wore on we thinned down into a long line, our little guide making the running with the more active or better mounted of the company close on his heels, while the laggards behind were whipped up and cheered on by Zoega, who was always at hand to tighten a girth or pick
