No man can tell why these things are. We have in this world to suffer and abide, living in the hope of a millennium of letters, when books of travel shall pass away and be no more. If asked concisely to describe this work we should say that it quite comes up to our notion of an American edition of Travels in Laputa by Baron Munchausen, with notes by Jules Verne, and illustrations by Gustave Dore. The author has evidently calculated that, as there are only 247 extant books of travel in Iceland, all that he says will be taken on the omne ignotum pro magnifico principle, and swallowed en bloc by that literary boa constrictor, the circulating library reader. Unfortunately for Lord W. M. B., we ourselves quite recently had the honour to be invited by a wealthy Liverpool shipowner named Bolt to join a party of ladies and gentlemen, whom he took to Iceland in his splendid steam yacht the “ Cargo.” We went over almost the same ground as that traversed by his lord- ship, and can only describe the journey as a magnificent pic-nic on a large scale. True it is that everything that could conduce to our comfort and enjoyment was pro- vided by our host, so that there was no necessity for us to eat our boots or kill the youngest and tenderest lady to boil down for soup. But let a man go in the humblest fashion, he will encounter none of the hardships and see but few of the astounding phenomena described by our noble but exaggerative author, whose perfor-
