By half-past three we were at the mouth of the fiord and looking straight out to the ocean, Iceland way. And now the weather began to look uncomfortable. Down over the great rocks, which act as the portals of the gate to the narrow waterway, came terrible rolling clouds of mist, which crept along the clefts and rents of the mountains and made their jagged peaks stand out as if suspended in the heavens. Out at sea a bright cold grey glare to the south, but from the north, whither our course lay, a sharp wind, driving down smoke and vapour and fog in our teeth as we rounded the corner. Mr Holt and the Captain had a little talk. Was it safe to creep round such a fearful coast if in a few minutes we were to be enwrapped in blinding mists ? But there was a brightness at the back of it all, as if something was struggling hard to shine through it, and there was a good stiff breeze to blow all clear in time. So we agreed that it was only a drifting fog canopy through which we would soon push our way, and round the point we steered. Then for an hour we gazed at such a piece of coast as we had never seen the like of before. We ran along at about a quarter of a mile off. Cathedral fa9ades, buttresses, arches, towers, pinnacles, minarets, everything in architecture that we could think of, there they were. Grey in tone, with deep inky stains and grooves, and speckled with clusters of white sea-birds, while greenness crowned them and ran down in little glades and valleys between them. Every now and then a little waterfall would straggle down from rock to rock and make a final leap into the sea. Then would come
