36 A TRIP Ilf TUB “ARGO.’ The solitary remnant of former days was the little graveyard by the church, with its rounded turf mounds over the silent dead. The old Sagas speak of it; and there to this day the scattered inhabitants of the dreary region around are gathered together to their last rest, and mingle their dust with that of warriors and priests of bygone centuries. Perhaps the wild and gloomy grandeur of the scene was the most fitting monument of the vanished glory of the past—more impressive and endurable than any graven stone. Very singular, never- theless, is it that so few traces of all the innumerable meetings that have been held on this spot have been found. It might reasonably have been expected that from time to time, bones, weapons, drinking cups, pieces of pottery or coins would have been found, but only a very few even of these have turned up. Some researches were being carried out at the time of our visit, and the Logberg itself was cut through crosswise with a deep trench in search of buried remains, but very little as yet had rewarded the antiquarian’s labour. A capital supper awaited our return from our stroll, and the cook outdid himself in the excellence of his tinned soup. Then to bed. What fun it was getting out the rugs and mattresses and wraps from the long bags ! Here was a real camping out in the wilderness. None of your Deeside pic-nics, but a struggle for exist- ance, as far as finding the softest plank to sleep on was concerned. The ladies and a few of the senior males were accommodated in the parson’s house, and the remainder repaired to the little wooden church. One could hardly make out why, after having ridden all day without seeing a score of people, we should come to a great dreary plain and find a church and a parsonage on
