So, being somewhat mischievously inclined, we screeched off the steam-whistle and fired one of the little brass stern-chasers, in which a charge happened to remain over from our morning’s bombardment. This was intended to “ astonish the natives,” and very likely the poor folk had many a wondering talk as to what could be the meaning of that big white steamer that went rushing through the lonely fiord shrieking and firing guns. What could it mean by disturbing the solitude of those waters where only the fisher’s skiff glided silently along, and the sea-birds alone were privileged to offend the stillness with their cries ? As we reached the far end of the fiord we were greatly attracted by the splendid mountain which rounds off the end of the island of Kunde. It was a solitary pyra- mid, tapering evenly to a fine point, and striped with the customary black lines. The regularity of its shape reminded us exactly of the Great Pyramid; and we found that its singular appearance had greatly attracted the voyagers of the “ Maria,” who adorned their work with a capital picture of it. At the base of this moun- tain the tides, which sweep along the fiords on each side of Kunde, blend together, and a smooth neutral patch of water remains at the point of the island. Here we were put into a state of great excitement for a few minutes by seeing a long line of boats, some twenty or thirty in number, drawn up in regular array and crowded with men. We thought we were in for a whale battue, and that there was a school somewhere in the fiord which this line of boats was watching in order to prevent escape. We were a little too far off to make out what was going on with the binoculars, and so got
