A SAIL THROUGH THE FAROE ISLANDS. Ill a dip in the line and a break, up which we could see a grassy glen running into the interior, with mist scudding along it, or at times rolling up and displaying the hills beyond. All along the water-line, standing bolt-upright, were the isolated pinnacles or “ stacks ” so characteristic of this coast. Many were placed at the mouths of great chasms or recesses like protecting gods at the entrances of gloomy temples. On an ordinary coast, near some watering-place, any one of them would have been an object of attraction. Casting our eyes up we could not make out the highest points of the cliffs, which were hidden in the mist and drizzle which still kept coming in from the sea. But after a little while a bright light broke through, and in rapid succession there appeared three lovely little rainbows. Their arches seemed very flat, and they reached only half-way up the cliffs, but although very evanescent, and only lasting for a minute or two, they were quite perfect. About half-past four this magnificent scene culminated at Mylinghead, the north-west point of the island of Stromo. It is a precipice which rises more than 2000 feet sheer from the water. At its feet, dabbling in the waves, were some splendid stacks. From its summit the last clouds were rolling away as we passed beneath, but we could only catch a momentary glimpse of it far up among them. Perhaps it was better they were there. They clothed it with mystery and made us almost afraid. In winter what seas must thrash and buffet old Myling- head, as it stands grimly looking out over the ocean to Iceland ! What a place for a ship to be driven against! Not even a momentary foothold for the poor gasping wretch whom some friendly plank might have carried to its base. Swift and irretrievable destruction.
