SALMON RIVERS AND TROUT STREAMS. 85 cub-fjord). Salmon are never seen in this river until September, and but few then; it being glaoier-fed and its water in summer as white as milk. In the Sva/rta (Black-river), tributary to this river, trout and char are to be caught. There is a trading post and inn at the mouth of the Blanda, but the Danish steamers do not call. A LaxA falls into the Ilhnafjor^r about six miles north-east of the debouchure of the Blanda. Salmon have not been caught in this river for some years, but the author cannot help thinking that a fish or two are to be found in the pools below the bridge. Trout up to 8 lbs. in weight have been caught in the stream flowing through the Hollardalr, a valley about five miles north of the Laxa, Os LaxA.—A few hours’ ride due north of the river last mentioned will bring the angler to this small but, it is said, well-stocked salmon river. This is the only Laxa in the north that was not visited by the author. Midway up the fjord is Skagastrond trading post, where the Danish steamers call. The Laxa falling into the SkagaejoitSb..—A fair-sized stream, but the salmon have been utterly exterminated by netting. A good day’s trout fishing is obtainable, however, and some excellent duck, curlew and plover shooting. The LaxA falling into the SkjIlfandi ‘Bugt’ (Shivering or Shimmering Bay).—In the author’s opinion the best salmon river in Iceland, though, as before said, the JVor^6rd in the west has the credit of being superior. The waters belonging to three farms on this river were taken on lease for five years by two Englishmen in 1878 ; but the author believes the lease has been thrown up ; at any rate no one has been on the waters leased for the last two summers. The lessees only caught six salmon, it is said, in 1879 ; whereas in the two previous years they caught respectively seventy- five and sixty-eight fish. This would be a splendid river for salmon fishing for any one who could afford to buy the nets and traps off the lower waters belonging to the farmer at Laxarmijri, who now catches 999 out of every 1,000 fish that enter the river. Excellent trout fishing obtainable under the falls abreast of Grenjd^arsta^r, and also in the upper waters, especially among the islands about a mile from the river’s outlet from Myvatn. LaxI, S.E. of the Yatna Jokull.—It is said salmon are caught in a tributary to a Jokulsa, draining the Vatna, that falls into the Papafjor&r near Lonsv'ik. Quite unknown to the author. This closes the list of salmon rivers that the author has visited or heard of during three summers in Iceland. It is possible that
