ROUTE I.—TO GEYSIR AND HEKLA. 109 Sruni or Skalholt will take between two and three hours ; to Sreppliolar about four. The Minni Laxa will have to he forded by both the Sruni and Srepphilar party. Obliging people and fair accommodation at all three places, hut rather dear at Sruni. Salmon fishing to he had in both the Lesser and Greater Laxa. Sixth Day.—To Stdruvellir, or a farm near. An easy one for all three divisions, therefore a late start may be made. The Skalholt party will cross the Svita by ferry, and the SrepplMar party will ferry or ford the Stcerra Laxa, shortly after setting out, and the Sruni party likewise, hut higher up the river. A ride of about an hour in the first instance, about half in the second, and an hour and a half in the third, will bring the three parties to the ferry over the pjSrsa (Bull-river). A visit should be paid to a little islet in the river, where one of the ancient local Things, the Arnes]>ing, held its meetings. There are two farms near by, at one of which a man and boat will be obtainable. An easy hour and a half’s ride from the river will bring the party to Storuvellir. The good old dean, Sira Gu’SmumSr Jonsson, is famous for his hospitality, and tourists are always made exceptionally comfortable. The ladies of the now reunited party should seek quarters here, and the males at the farms in the vicinity. Seventh Day—Ascent op Hekla.—An early start must be made. A guide for the ascent will be hired either at Natfrholt or Selsund ; the farm first named is the nearest to Sekla, and is the one generally selected. The hire of a guide is usually 6 kroner. On the way a small river, the Vestri Ranga (West Wrong-river), will be forded. From NcefrTiott the journey to and ascent of the mountain takes about four and a half hours, and the descent and return journey somewhat less; the ponies can be ridden for some distance. The apex of Sekla, 5,108 feet, is the north-east lip of the northernmost of the two craters upon its summit. This volcano is credited with seventeen eruptions, hut it is doubtful if so many have taken place, eruptions in any part of Iceland usually being placed to Sekla's credit. The dates of the eruptions recorded are given in the tabulated list of volcanoes in the right-hand upper comer of the map attached to this work. Eruptions of lava occasionally take place in the vicinity, while the mountain itself is quiescent; and the author believes the lava wells forth from fissures torn in the rocky strata roofing in a subterranean channel connecting the volcanic vent of Sekla with the vast central vent beneath Askja (See Chapter II. p. 47). The last eruption of lava took place in 1878, some miles north-east of Sekla; others are recorded in 1554 and 1754.
