ironies n y the a urn on. NORWAY. THE SPORTSMAN’S HANDBOOK. Crown 8vo., 37G Pages, cloth, bevelled boards, 10«. 6d. ; by post 11s. ‘ SPORTING LIFE ON THE NORWEGIAN FIELDS ’ (‘ TILFJELDS ’). By Prof. Eriis, with a Map printed in colours, showing where Elk, Reddeer, and Reindeer are to bo found. An English Trans- lation of the above by W. G. Lock, with a Synopsis of the Norwegian Game Laws, and chapters on the Rental of Shootings, Salmon Eishing, etc., forming the most perfect Sportsman’s Guide to Norway yet published. ‘ The Field,’ in its Review of ‘ Tilf.telds,’ as a Norwegian work, stated : — ‘ Regarded by his countrymen as one of the most accomplished and successful of the newer school of Norwegian sportsmen, Herr Friis volunteers to act as guide to districts* where his wanderings, extended over more than twenty summers, have rendered him familiar with every streamlet, tarn or waste every haunt of fish or game. He would appear, at some time or other, to have extended his search for game over all the principal fjelds in the south of Norway and to be nearly as much at home on Dovre, or on the Lessje Fjelds, in Jotunheim, or on the Ilardanger-vidde. The traveller . . . will find Herr Friis’s hook . . . well worthy of a place among his baggage ... as a guide hook, or also as a pleasant resource in times of unavoidable idleness.* 1 The Field,’ tlms Reviewed the English Version : — ‘ We congratulate the numerous class of Anglo-Scandinavian sportsmen who have not mastered Norsk on the very readable addition to their literature afforded by the above trans- lation, for Avbich we have to thank Mr. Lock. A review of Professor Friis’s original work appeared in our number of 24th of March, 1877 (p. 347), and to the favourable opinion therein expressed we can only add that the English version is faithful and fluent. Professor Friis is such a master of his subject, and so enthusiastic and yet simple in his treatment of it, that Mr. Lock, who is also a sportsman and lover of the rifle, must indeed have found it a labour oflove to Anglicise the hook for the benefit of his fellow islanders. Indeed, the work can be safely recommended for perusal by the non-sporting public, as the purely shooting and fishing episodes are so pleasingly interwoven with descriptions of scenery, natural history, and botanical notes, and happy illustrations of the inner life of peasants, milkmaids, and other minor dramatis persona’, that there can he no lack of interest. There is, moreover, a vein of quiet humour in the author, which at times is quaintly comical. . . . ‘ Mr. Lock, besides some useful explanatory notes, adds hints to English sportsmen visiting Norway, accounts of rental of shootings, instructions for salmon fishing, and a synopsis of the Norwegian game laws, so often of late discussed in our columns. ‘ The map referred to in the title shows by coloured patches where reindeer, elk, and red- doer are found in Southern Norway—somewhat on the same scheme as the excellent maps of [over.]
