OUTLINE OF THE NJAL SAGA. 67 ‘ “Fair enough is this maid, and many will smart for it; hut this I know not, whence thief’s eyes have come into our race.” ‘ Then Hoskuld was wroth, and for a time the brothers saw little of each other.’ Hrutr’s prophecy was hut too fully verified. In a.d. 955, her father, being tired of her at home, gave her, when but fifteen years of age, in marriage to a man named Jlorvaldr, who survived his unfortunate union hut a year; for the axe of Hanger’S a’s foster- father, piostolfr, at her instigation, put an end to husband Ho. One. She shortly after married again, a man named Glum, and he also fell under piostolfr’s axe. We shall next hear of her as Gunnar’s wife ; but two more of the dramatis personce must be first introduced: Mord, whose surname was Fiddle, and his only daughter, Unna, a fair, courteous and gifted woman, who was thought ‘the best match in the Wrong-river valleys.’ Mord dwelt near the Rang a (Wrong-river). He was a son of Sigvat the Red, and a mighty chief, and ‘ a great taker up of suits, and so great a lawyer that no. judgments were thought lawful unless he had a hand in them.’ Hnna became the wife of Hrutr, but she shortly after separated from him, and when her father died she took all the goods this wealthy man left behind him; but she was very lavish and un- thrifty, so that her ready money and goods wasted away, and at last she had scarcely anything left hut land and cattle. Several chapters must be passed over, in which is told how Gunnar went a 1 sea-roving ’ after compelling Hrutr to restore to Unna her dower; Unna’s second weddiug, and many other interest- ing incidents, graphically narrated, throwing light upon life in Iceland during the tenth century. When Gunnar returned from his sea-roving, HallgerSa, with unbecoming boldness, came out to welcome him from the booths of her kinsmen, at that time encamped at pingcellir, the Aljfing being sitting. Gunnar was smitten by her beauty, proposed marriage against the advice of Njal, was accepted, and the marriage came off in due course. All the intervening incidents must he passed over, until, in Chapter 35, we learn how Hjal’s wife made an enemy of this fiend in woman’s form, HallgerSa. She and her husband visited Hjal at Berg\6rshvoll, from tvhom they received a hearty welcome. All went well until Helgi, Njal’s son and his wife porhalla, came in. Then Berg\ora said to HallgerSa:— ‘ “ Thou shalt give place to this woman.”
