OUTFIT, GUIDES AND PONIES. 27 canvas must also be turned over for about an inch and sewn, bolt- rope fashion, to a piece of rope, f- in. in diameter, each end of w'hieh is ‘ turned ’ into an eye, through which the end of the pole on each side may be passed, and support what wdll be the head and foot of the canvas. Place the two boxes six feet apart, insert the ends of the poles into the sockets close under the lids, and the bedstead is complete. No mattrass will be needed, as one can lie soft enough without, owing to the absence of cross bars. The only bedding that will be required is a pair of thick grey or red Canadian blankets, or two or three good serviceable rugs. This form of camp bedstead has one great advantage over all others that the author ever heard of, it adds next to nothing to the weight of one’s baggage; and with it or a ‘Garnet Wolseley’ the tourist and sportsman can pass the night in a fairly comfortable manner wher- ever he gets a roof to shelter him. A waterproof bag or wrapper will be necessary in which to carry the blankets or rugs; and this should be protected from the chafing of ropes and straps by being placed in a coarse sack, otherwise holes will be soon worn in it. Tents.—With reference to these but little will be said, for, as observed in the introductory remarks, Iceland is no country for tent-life, owing to the difficulty and expense of transporting any great quantity of provisions, fuel and baggage about. The reindeer- stalker and those who intend crossing the island vid the Sprengisandr, or any other desert-route, are the only persons who will need one; and to them it may be said, let the tents taken—two will be neces- sary if three or four persons travel in company, one for themselves and one for their men—be as light and strong as possible, and the fewer poles (which must be jointed with ferrules for pony trans- port) they need the better. The camping out party will require a spirit or paraffine lamp cooking apparatus, as even enough brush- wood to boil a kettle of water is rarely obtainable in the desert interior. The paraffine lamp is to be preferred, paraffine being obtainable at every store in Iceland ; as also are very practical little cooking apparatuses with kettles. As before observed, most of the large farmers own a rude tent of home manufacture, which is used by their farm-servants when hay- making at a distance from home, and the sportsman who purposes merely to spend a few days after reindeer on the moorland wastes in the east, would do far better to borrow a tent from a farmer in the vicinity than incur the trouble and expense of transporting one about the country.
