18 GUIDE TO ICELAND. Nor is it by any means easy to get a shot at a reindeer, the three herds known to exist in the island having each chosen as an habitat a wild mountainous region abounding in lava-beds, to which the deer flee for safety when alarmed, and where it is next to im- possible to follow them. The author, however, in 1880, was fortunate enough to fall in with a small herd twice on favourable stalking ground, and upon each occasion two fell to his rifle, the first of these animals, it is believed, that had ever fallen to an Englishman’s rifle in Iceland. Lord Binning, later on in the year, also succeeded in shooting one, a patriarchal buck, with magnificent antlers having close upon forty tines. Last year (1881) — Camp- bell, B..E., and a Erench Baron each succeeded in shooting a fine deer. A word or two here to the sporting tourist with but a limited time at his disposal will not be out of place, as members of this class by shooting game in the month of July have brought their countrymen into disrepute with the educated classes in Iceland, and compelled the Aiding last year to pass a law enforcing a close time from April till the 1st of August. He can have fishing or shooting in abundance if he will only visit Iceland at the right season, viz. July for the fishing, August for the shooting. Eor both he must either make a lengthy stay, or visit the island late in July or early in August, when he couid have a fortnight’s fish- ing before taking to the gun. The early part of July, however, is the best time for the angler. Any one who visits Iceland for the shooting alone should do so not later than the end of the first week in August, as in this hyperborean isle the season during which it is possible to shoot over dogs is usually of but brief duration ; the young birds, even in favourable years, are not strong on the wing before the time mentioned, and about the middle of September bad weather frequently sets in ; the grouse pack among the lava-beds or along the border of the snow line on the precipitous fjeld slopes, where it is next to impossible to follow them, and the ducks, curlew and plover take flight to more temperate climes; but between those dates, especially in the North, a month’s excellent sport is to be had. Many a sportsman has hurried home to shoot grouse on a Scotch moor, or to keep ‘ The Eeast of St. Partridge,’ when had he but remained in Iceland he might have shot over some of the best- stocked unpreserved moors in the world, moors where the hybrid grouse mentioned are that plentiful twenty to thirty brace can be easily bagged by a fair shot in the course of a few hours.
