OUTFIT, GUIDES AND PONIES. 31 Pishing Tackle.—The rod recommended for general use has already been briefly described. The salmon-fisher who purposes to buy the nets off a portion, or the whole of a river, and proceed direct to it, is the only person who should take a long jointed salmon-rod to Iceland. If several rods are taken, let them be packed in a stout wooden case for pony transport. Plies.—Any salmon flies answer; the butcher and Jock Scott are perhaps favourites. Have the salmon flies tied on double hooks, it doubles one’s chance of landing fish. The trout in Iceland run large, therefore a good stock of lake-trout and small grilse flies should be taken. The author found that gaudy flics were preferred, those with tinsel, or red woollen bodies, bound with gold or silver twist, golden pheasant tails and brownish wings being the most killing. In 1878 and 1880, in the waters of the Laxa from Myvatn, a river greatly choked with weeds in its shallows, the fish would not look at flies with any green or blue in their composition; while last summer (1881), which was unusually unsettled with spells of cold weather, during which there were no natural flies about, the trout would take anything in the shape of a fly that was thrown to them ; and the author disposed of several with green and blue bodies—the only flies he had left, that he had got to look upon as quite useless on that river. Have a hundred yards of line, not too coarse, on your winch, and see that your gut easts are new and sound. Clear out all doubtful flies and casts from your tackle-book, and take a good stock of flies with you, for the lava boulders on the banks of, and in, most of the Icelandic rivers will dispose of as many of your flies as would a dense belt of timber on the banks. The angler will find a mosquito veil very useful; let it be very fine meshed, as it is not needed to keep off that delectable insect after which it is named, but a remarkably minute and persistent species of midge. Baiteey.—A 450 or 500 gauge double Express-rifle, and a double twelve bore central-fire breechloader, one barrel choked (for swans and ducks), are weapons that most sportsmen possess, and will do very well. A twenty gauge, choked, double shot gun, however, like those spoken so highly of recently in ‘ The Pield,’ with a pair of 450 Express-rifle barrels fitted to the same stock, would be the ‘ tool ’ for Icelandic sport in the hands of a good shot, as in both weapon and ammunition space and weight would be greatly economized. Take a plentiful supply of tow, or better still lamp cotton, and oil for cleaning.
