ROUTE III.—A SUMMER’S TOUR IX ICELAND. 159 steam, perhaps also hot water, belch forth with such violence that the rock trembles under one’s feet when standing 600 feet above them. In the introductory chapter, page 11, the 1875 eruption was briefly described; and it will be seen it was a very remarkable one in several respects. No lava was ejected from the volcano itself, this substance forcing its way through a subterranean channel for a distance of 30 miles ere it found a vent, coming to the surface in the Myoatns Orcefl at a lower altitude by 2,400 feet than the rift and crater in Asiya, from which the pumice and ashes were ejected. To return to the travellers, whom the author has conducted as far as the pass, and there left them while he briefly described the volcano and its doings in 1875. They will probably find themselves in Askja at the foot of the pass about 5 a.m of the Fifty-second Day—and, if twelve hours is devoted to the explora- tion of this vast crater, they will have time to make their way through the pass on the return journey, and accomplish the greater part of the descent of the mountain, before the chilly night hours overtake them. About 4 a.m. of the Fifty-third Day will see them safely back at Svartarkot; and, should the party have been favoured with fine weather, the author feels certain they will be charmed with their excursion, and inclined to agree with Mr. Delmar Morgan that ‘the traveller to Iceland should not omit a visit to Askja.' Of course, immediately upon reaching Scartarkot, the travellers will seek their beds, and there pass the remainder of the day. Fifty-fourth Day.—If it is intended to return to Akureyri, Svartarkot to Stdruvellir. An easy day’s journey. The Skjdlfan- dafljdt should be forded near Lundarbrekka church. If it is purposed to go eastward to Sey¥>isfjor6r, ride back to-day to Skutustar6ir, and thence on the morrow proceed to ReyhjahlvS. Fifty-fifth Day'.—Stiruvellir to Akureyri. Do not let your guide take you by the path over the mountains north-east of Stdru- vellir ; it is a little nearer, but terrible hard work for the ponies. Insist upon going vid Ljdsavatn. To Sey’Sisfjor’Sr. Fifty-sixth Day.—Reykjahl'r§ to Gr'imstdKir (Grfmr’s-stead). A man, and two ponies for his use, will have to be taken from ReykjahlvS to ferry the travellers over the Jokulsd. The fixed charge is 6 kroner for the man and ponies, 25 ore for each person
