ROUTE II.—THROUGH ‘THE NJAL COUNTRY.’ 121 tolerably fertile stretch of country till the vast laya-hed in the lower part of the valley of the Kverfisfljot is reached. The path winds through this for about eight miles, and then again enters a peopled district, watered by several rivers, which will have to be forded ere Kalfafell is reached. Sixteenth Day.—Kalfafell to the ‘Forest’ nestling amid the glaciers of the Vatna Jokull. A most interesting excursion ; but a local guide is indispensable. A halt should be made at Niipstafcr (Peak-stead) for a cup of coffee. It was from this farm that Mr. "Watts started upon his perilous journey across the Vatna Jokull in 1875. The path to the Forest passes close under the Lotnagnupr (Loon-peak), a towering wall 2,400 feet high. North of the Forest, amidst the glaciers, are some lakes, Gr'imsvotn, which it is believed are craters; and an attempt should be made to visit them. It is recorded that eruptions took place from them in a.d. 1598, 1685 and 1716. An excursion should also be made to the Seljalandsfoss, a fine fall on the Uverfisjljdt. Seventeenth Day.—Kalfafell to Svmafell (Swine-fell) or Sand- fell, respectively a farm and parsonage lying at the base of the Orcefa Jokull, an ice-clad volcano that is said to be the monarch of the Icelandic mountains. An easy day’s ride over the Skei^&arar- sandr (Swift-river-sand), a vast extent of sand and gravel, the detritus of the glaciers. Several glacier-fed streams to ford at the commencement, and towards the close, of the day’s journey. The accommodation at Sv'mafell is said to be fair; it is the nearest farm to the Jokull. Eighteenth and Nineteenth Days.—An assault should be made upon the Orcefa Jokull, 6,455 feet, which, it is believed, is a virgin peak. The second will be a day of rest before setting out on the return journey. If wished, from this point the travellers, instead of returning to Reykjavik, can proceed on to BerufjorSr, KskifjorSr or Sey'*&isfj6r>&r, three trading posts on the east coast, called at by the Danish steamers. (See dotted route line on the map.) Twentieth Day.—Return to Kalfafell. Twenty-eirst Day.—Kalfafell to A’sar. Twenty-second Day.—A'sar to Vik (Wick). Nearly the whole of this day’s journey will lie across the Myrdalssandr, an extensive tract of detritus brought down from the Jokull after which the waste is named. A number of glacier-fed streams will have to be forded. Just before reaching JJdfKalrekha church, the four forks of the Miklakvisl (Mickle-forks) will be forded. These insulate a triangular-shaped island with its base seaward. On
