i * f li “11 BIDE TO “ To sit on rocks, to muse o’er flood and fell: To climb the trackless mountains all unseen, With the wild flock that never needs a fold, Alone o’er steeps and foaming falls to lean; This is not solitude ; ’tis but to hold Converse with Nature’s charms, and view her stores unroll’d.” Far away on the very verge of the Arctic circle, where the dark waters of the North Atlantic sweep on to meet the Polar Sea, lies an island— the Ultima Thule of the ancients, the Iceland of to-day. Within the same limits of space there is no place on the earth’s surface which exhibits such numerous and varied evidences of past and present volcanic action. Its countless mountains, vol- canoes, jokuls, glaciers, rushing rivers, dashing cataracts, sulphur beds, boiling springs, and geysers, must ever prove a great attraction to the lover of natural scenery. In the person’s habits and customs of the present Icelander we are fur- nished with a faithful picture of those exhibited by our ancestors, for they adhere most rigidly to whatever has once been adopted as a national custom. Their language, dress, and mode of life, have been invariably the same during the past ten centuries. Whilst of its literature, it spread with such marvellous rapidity during the so-called Dark Ages that— “ Iceland shone with glorious lore renowned, A Northern light when all was gloom around.” Thomas Carlyle has said of these productions, “ They deserve to be reckoned amongst the great history books of the world ; an acquaintance with THROUGH ICELAND.” THE FAROES.
