55 reverence, may project taller shadows on the world’s stage, but though the scene be narrow here and light be wanting, the interest is not the less intense, nor are the passions less awful that inspired these rude dramas. 1- uller says:— “ Every one with whom you converse, and every place wherein you tarry awhile, giveth something to you, either for evil or for good.” A perusal of the Icelandic historians, with their striking individuality, arouses one’s interest at first as in acquaintances, and rivets it at last as in personal friends. Iceland’s day was an early one. She came into maturity with extraordinary rapidity’, ran through some centuries of the brightest sun- shine, and then died out into the twilight in which we find her to-day. Her colonizers were no gang of outcasts or poverty-stricken exiles, but men who, in their own land, had been both rich and noble, the very pith and backbone of old Norway—men whose proud and independent spirit forbade them to endure taxation They had heard oi Iceland as the El dorado of the hour, and left their country by hundreds, with all their families and friends, to establish a freedom on the rugged shores of the new strange land, taking with them whatever refinement and learning the age they lived in was capable of supplying Early in the 11th century, several of them visited Europe to study in the various universities, whilst churches and schools were established in the country itself, taught by native bishops and teachers. With such marvellous rapidity did education spread, that in the 13th century, during what was termed the Dark Ages— “ Iceland shone with glorious lore renowned, A northern light when all was gloom around.” Trench tells us in his “Study of Words”:— “Just as in some fossil, curious and beautiful shapes of vegetable or animal life, the graceful fern, or the finely vertebrated lizard, such as have been extinct for thousands of years, are per- manently bound up with the stone, so in words are beautiful thoughts and images, the imagina- tion and the feeling of past ages, of men long since in their graves, of men whose very names have perished, preserved and made safe for ever.
