47 the guide fastens them all in a circle, tying the head of one to the tail of another, and bringing the head of the first round to the tail of the last ; therefore, if they are disposed to move at all, there must be an agreement to turn their heads the same way, and even then, like a rocking horse, they may gallop all day and not get far. The Icelanders and their horses have signs which serve in lieu of language ; when the rider dismounts he simply leaves the reins over the animal’s head, the latter knows he will be wanted again soon and must not wander far ; if, however, the bridle is left loose, the horse knows he may roam at will in search of food until his master seeks him. The usual mode for making the pony go fast is to kick its sides incessantly with the legs, which a native does for hours together, and so accustomed is the pony to this “ clapping ” that ours slackened its pace as soon as it ceased. In the ancient days of the Althing, the legislators encamped in moveable booths around the place of meeting, and now no Arab could be prouder of his courser than they are of their little ponies ; or reverence more deeply the sacred rights of hospitality, whilst the salutations received as we passed them in the “ desert,” as they invariably call the uninhabitated part of the country, would not have misbecome the stately courtesy of an ancient worshipper of the sun. The ponies were black, brown, white, chestnut, or piebald, and laden with every conceivable kind of saddle and pack. Many of the smaller ones were almost hidden by the number of sacks they carried of rye or wheat, salt, sugar, snuff, coffee, and everything else which was necessary for their consumption during the ensuing winter, whilst some bore timber, about four inches square and twelve feet long. One or more pieces was lashed on each side of a horse, with one end dragging on the ground ; they will go twenty miles a day. These people w'ere coming from the fTfTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?TTTT1 '▼TT’fTTTIM L
