54 reflection and discussion. Are these volcanoes the earth’s safety valves ? Does the earth need them ? Is the earth solid ? If it be a huge cauldron full of water, air, and gases, could the explosions and vomitings of these active volcanoes save us in time of trouble? Their united openings are no more than equal to a needle point hole in a school globe. Can such a hole—or 200 of them—be sufficient vent-pegs for a globeful of boiling liquids or red-hot solids? Weliavemuch yet to learn. ----“ Fire that art slumbering there, Hast not some flaming imp or messenger, Of empyrean element, to whom In virtue of his nature, are both known The secrets of the burning, central void below, And yon bright heaven.” The last night up-country we spent at a farm where the hay-harvest had just finished, and the farmer was treating his family and labourers to a special feast, which consisted of mutton and a soup of milk and flour. We learned that after this all labour out of doors ceases for the rest of the year, for soon after August the scant vegeta- tion turns yellow, the flowers wither, and a thick mantle of snow covers mountain and vale, meadow and moor, whilst the birds fly south to a warmer country, and the long, long night comes on once more. Work, however, goes on incessantly. In the whole family it would be vain to seek a single idler. The women and girls spin and knit; the men and boys knit, or make and mend their simple agricultural implements and household utensils, while by the dubious light of a tallow lamp just making obscurity visible, sits one of the family who reads aloud some ancient chronicle or “ saga,” as the historical records of the Icelanders are called. By these means, although nine centuries have passed, the names of the proud yarls who first frequented the fiords are still known, and the exploits of the brave vikings who spread terror and desolation along all the coasts of Europe, still fill the hearts of these peaceful islanders with a glow of patriotic pride.
