In 1148 Pope Nicholas granted “ to his beloved people of Greenland in consideration of their having erected many sacred buildings, a new bishop and several priests.” So prosperous did they become that they built a splendid cathedral, and sent to Denmark for a bishop He, however, was prevented from reaching his see by some sudden climatic change which brought the ice down between Greenland and Iceland, and from that time the colony with its cathedral, churches, and monasteries, has faded into oblivion like the fabric of a dream. The memory of i's existance perished and the allusions made in the old Sagas gradually came to be considered poetical inven- tions or pious frauds. Some few years ago, far away within the Straits, some Dutchmen found a stone inscribed “1135, Yigdessa lies here, God gladdens her soul,” but it has never been ascertained what became of the ancient city and its inhabitants. Like another we wonder if they have preserved some singular civilization of their own, and are they still singing, drinking, fighting and waiting for their bishop from over the sea ? ry w v wnrv*
