25 everything likely to be used during a wilderness journey, which were packed in strong wooden boxes and tied upon the horse’s back with rough woollen ropes. We had to re-pack our luggage several times during a day’s journey, for, as the ponies trot along, one side will weigh up the other, or the animals get jammed together and knock their loads out of equilibrium. The start was a prolonged amusement of two hours. Our eight ponies collected at the door with much stamping and bustle. We had intended to start at nine, but what matters time when there are no trains or post to catch, and it is light all night ? Besides, here no one really knows what o’clock it is, and it is much more important to keeptemper than time, for a genuine Icelander will not be hurried. But at 12 o’clock, amid the cheers of our late shipmates, cracking our whips with their lashes six feet long, we galloped off. “ Rarely it occurs that any of us make this journey on which I go,” said the guide to Dante in his Inferno. But, as I “ entered on the arduous and savage way ” and gazed around on the “ desert strand,” I felt particularly comfortable ; there was something gratifying in being the sole proprietor of such a cavalcade, and a delightful uncertainty about beds, meals, fires and all home comforts in the near future.
