We had to re-pack our luggage several times during a day’s journey, for, as the ponies trot along, one side will weigh up the other, or the animals get jammed together and knock their loads out of equilibrium. The start was a prolonged amusement of two hours. Our eight ponies collected at the door with much stamping and bustle. We had intended to start at nine, but what matters time when there are no trains or post to catch, and it is light all night ?
