AAA, 22 elective congress met and legislated in the open- air for a thousand years. In more favoured climes one finds comfortable houses, and “ fruits and fragrance blush on every tree here, not a fruit and not a single grain of corn will ripen, and their houses are mere huts of lava and turf. In other lands, coal and wood fires enliven every hearth, and mines of iron, lead, copper, silver, and gold reward the labour of the delver ; but here, not a particle of coal, nor one single mineral of value, and not a piece of wood larger than a walk- ing stick, can be found. The golden cod-harvests are annually reaped on Iceland’s shores by hundreds of sloops and smacks belonging to the English, French and Dutch fishermen, whilst one half of the inhabi- tants came flocking from the east and west, and remotest districts of the north, to take part in the ingathering. Many thus travel over 200 miles in the midst of winter, whilst the storms howl over the naked waste, and the sun scarcely dispels for a few hours the darkness of the night. About the middle of May these migratory fishermen return to their homes, leaving their fish which have been split open and hung upon lines, or exposed on the shore to the cold winds and hot sun and are not yet quite dry, to the care of the resident fisher- men. We saw the fish at every place we visited laid upon the rocks in immense numbers, and at- tended by a body of women and girls, who care- fully watch their charges, and, upon the approach of rain, swiftly gather up the fish and pull it into stacks. Then, almost in the twinkling of an eye, when the sun breaks forth again, the fish are re- spread. Some of the fishermen divided their newly- caught spoil into shares after the old fashion, called “choice and deal”—one man dividing and another with his back turned assign- ing the lots. The fish are exported and the people, to a great extent, live on the heads. We saw bundles of cod-heads tied up ready for conveyance into the interior, and one will probably not meet a single train of ponies on any track in the whole country whose load does not include some of these necessary acticles of diet. We learned they were worth one penny each, and, in times of scarcity, W V W Tvrvw MlfM wwwwwm
