Cultural affairs
Icelanders are a people which have a com-
mon culture, heritage and history. The mainte-
nance of a strong national identity is possibly
more important to Iceland than most other
countries. The smallness of its population
means that the vigilant preservation of its lan-
guage and culture is essential to the preserva-
tion of its independence. Because we are so
few, the responsibility and initiative of every
individual is important. Culture does not stand
still, it is alive and mutable, and therefore
needs constant renewal and care. This cannot
be ensured by centralized legislation alone and
therefore in few places is there more need for distribution of power.
Through the ages it was naturally mostly women who saw to preserving the na-
tional culture through oral tradition. Therefore, it falls to women to protect this
sector of life and appreciate its importance. Women perceive the connection be-
tween culture and peace, artistic pedagogy (which is based on cooperation rather
than competition) and peace pedagogy, humanitarian thinking and the female
values.
Artists and women have much in common. Both groups are called corner stones
on solemn occasions. Culture is the corner stone of the nation and the language,
women the corner stone of the family. But when it comes to putting a price tag on
the corner stones, we hear another tune.
Few artists have a regular income, they have no access to superannuation, no
pension other than old-age pension and the lucrativeness of their work cannot be
measured or evaluated concretely.
Last, but not least, all changes are based on ideas. Ideas come into existence
through creation. Life springs from life.
