Peace and foreign policy
Icelanders have never raised arms against
another nation which makes it only natural for us
to be advocators of peace and disarmament. We
should take an active part as spokesmen for peace
on an intemational level especially as we are geo-
graphically situated between the two super pow-
ers.
The use of force and a lack of respect for all living
creatures has dominated the policies of the gov-
emmental power structures of the world. This pol-
icy and its ideology is in direct contradiction to
feminist culture, whose force is based on the per-
petuation of life, its protection and its preservation.
The Women's Alliance wishes to change this predominating influence. We need
to start with our own nation before we can become effective on an intemational
basis. Icelandic women have received recognition for their actions and new ideas
in the feminist stmggle. We have a message to the world and therefore it is im-
perative that we strengthen our relations with all nations.
The state of affairs in the world is not encouraging. Hunger, disease, ignorance,
and unemployment threaten millions of people. At the same time, a part of the
western world lives in luxury and allow themselves to waste the world’s resources
and pollute the world which belongs to us collectively. This situation is immoral
and can no longer be tolerated.
The pollution of the sea threatens the prosperity of Iceland as well as endanger-
ing all life on earth. It is therefore our concem to work against pollution, the wast-
ing of resources, and the destmction of vegetation.
We belong to the group of nations which have enough to spare. It is our duty to
contribute our share in assisting developing nations who need and request aid.
Iceland is a mesh in the military net of the superpowers. Lately we have become
more entangled in this net. Military build-up has increased considerably in recent
years. New weaponry, an oil-harbour, radarstations and nuclear-attack resistant
hangars are all examples of how Iceland is being used as a war base.
The Women's Alliance opposes militarism. We want to stop all military prac-
tices in our country immediately and work against all military alliances. The pub-
lic here as elsewhere must rise against the military concepts which shape the de-
cisions of those in power. We cannot commit our lives and future into the hands
of a few men. Thus our stand must be with those who work for peace in the world
and proclaim Iceland inviolate without arms in a world without military al-
liances.
