Demographic distribution
and allocations
Women's perspectives are needed in order to
change the priorities of the policy towards demo-
graphic distributions and allocations. Population
decreases in rural areas have been the trend dur-
ing the last years.
Allocation policies have had a negative effect on
the rural areas, threatening the economic base and
income of the people. Basic industries have suf-
fered through lack of organization and manage-
ment. The quota system in the fishing industry has
resulted in less employment. The unregulated de-
crease of farmers has damaged the services offered
in rural areas as well as breaking social and cul-
tural bonds necessary to our society.
To strengthen the economic base in rural areas we must develop small indus-
tries and investigate possibilities of new production methods and the recycling of
different materials. We should find new ways of processing agricultural products,
and their processing needs to be located near areas of production. In the fishing
industry it is imperative to review the processing of raw material and to investi-
gate possibilities of its better usage and organization.
The residents of rural areas do not have the same access to health care, educa-
tion and other social services provided by govemment institutions, as their urban
counterparts.
Centralization and over-administration of the Icelandic govemmental system
has resulted in the diminishing influence of the mral population in the decision
making process. It is therefore necessary to strengthen the municipalities so that
their points of view are heard when decisions are taken.
These issues which are of greatest importance to women are the same nation
wide. Women are some of the main victims of wage injustice. They abhor the con-
ditions facing their children in education and development. They want to ensure
that the ill, the handicapped, and the aged receive the best services possible.
There is still much work to be done.
It is important to strengthen understanding between the population of the rural
and urban areas and the cooperation which is necessary to ensure the prosperity
of our nation.
