Government expenditure
The Women's Alliance has continually warned
against a deficit on the national budget and
pointed out methods of economization and new
means of increasing income. Our suggestions have
been ignored with the following results. Despite a
good year and a favourable outlook for future pros-
perity our national debts have increased and the
problems postponed to be dealt with by future
generations.
The Women's Alliance criticizes the government
for their irresponsible use of our collective wealth
and we emphasize other priorities for expenditure.
It is absurd to spend hundreds of millions of
krónur yearly for the construction of power plants when we can now harness more
energy than is needed. It would instead be appropriate to allocate more to educa-
tion and research which would thus strengthen the basis for new growth and de-
velopment within our economy.
The millions poured into futile negotiations with large foreign companies
would have been better used for conservation and improving conditions for our
tourist trade.
The Women's Alliance would have liked to use the millions which were spent
on the new air terminal for more essential tasks such as the construction of
airstrips in rural areas.
Entertainment and travel expenses of government employees in the past years
have been more than the combined allocations to the construction of day-care
centres, primary schools, and health centres nationwide. We condemn the govern-
ment's value judgments.
The misguided priorities of the last government has resulted in the national
government now being in debt to the municipalities.
This is the situation in government expenditure when the voice of the practical
and economical housewife goes unheard.
