In 1832 he had obtained an allowance from the Danish Government for a trip to Iceland in order to make himself acquainted with the Icelandic localities and affairs. 137. Ralslev’s catechism (translated by Ólafur Páls- son) was authorized to be used as well as Balle’s ; Pal- slev's was scornfully called the “tossa - kver’’, that isca- techism for those slow to learn, on account of being much shorter than Balle’s book ; the collection has the 3d and the 4th cdition of this work (Reykjavík 1869 and 1872). In 1877 Helgi Hálfdánarson, afterwards director of the Theological School of Iceland, published a catechism (Kristilegur barnalœrdómur eptir Lúthers kenningu) which was aut’.iorized by the Minister for Iceland in the following year. Of this work there are many editions, all published at Copenhagen excepting the first three ; the collection possesses: the Ist ed. Rvík. 1877; the 6th, Kaupmannahöfn 1891; theSth, Kaupmannahöfn 1897 and the 9th, Kaupmannahöfn 1902. In 1899 a catechism by the Norwegian thcologian Thorvald Klaveness, obtained the government authorization. It was tranlated by Þórhallur Bjarnarsonand has so far been printed three times, Reyk- javík 1899, 1900 and 1905. A catechism for deaf and dumbby Páll Pálsson was published in Copenhagen 1867. 139. This is the first edition of this telcological poem by the eminent mathematician, Björn Gunnlaugsson, the two subsequent being edited by Jón Árnason, the folklorist, and printed at Reykjavik 1853 and 1884.
