Deo supplica. 2. Parentes ama. 3. Cognatos cole. Gud It may be as well here to correct some slight errors on p. 404 of the work “Om Digtningen pi Island i det 15. oglO. Árhundrede” by Dr. Jón Lorkelsson (the younger), where a description of the Arna-Magnæan exemplar is given. In the title, as there copied, there should be a per- iod after the word “Vernacule” (15th line of t.-p ). He speaks of the Arna-Magnæan copy as “fuldstændigt pá nær, at sidste blad er hándskrevet”, while, as we have seen, the copy lacks at least two printed leaves. ANALYSIS. Thc title-page, as will be seen, enumerates the three productions of which the little book is mainly composed. The Latin lines (1, 2, 3, 14, 15, 19, 20) are, of eourse in the Roman, the remaining lines in the Gothic letter. The text of the introductory matter (called in some of the editions of the “Dicta” of Cato “Præcepta brevissima”) begins on the reverse of the t.-f. (or f. la) at the top of the page, with no heading except the running title, Fyrsta Bok \ Calonis, which title is continued through the introductory precepts, and on to the end of the first book. On this second page, as reprinted above, it is to be noticed that all the sub-headings—including the first part of the running title — Fyrsta Bok, Liod, Vijsan are in Gothic, as are all the Icelandic sentences and paragraphs, while the Latin ones here and throughout the book are in Roman. After thc first threc lines (headed Liod) giving the subjcct (and author) of the “Disticha” in Icclandic allixerative metre, comes a paraphrase of this announce- ment in rhymed Icelandic verse. The Latin text of these first lines is omitted. Then follows the untitled Latin dedi- cation to the young {Fili carissime), which is repeated in Icelandic alliterative verse (Liod) and again in two rhymed metricalparagraphs ( Vijsan). After this theorder becomes regular : 1. Numbered Latin phrases (text and numbers in Roman) ; 2. Icelandic alliterative vcrsion in Gothic, phrases numbered (Arabic numerals) ; 3. Rhymcd version without numbers. These series, each in th^ee parts, succeed each other without hcadings and with no typographical indications of grouping. Specimen of introductory preccpts (ff. 3b—4a): The preliminary precepts end f. 4b, followed, at the bottom of the page, with an ornament (lion’s head on a suspended scroll). On the next page, f. 5a begins the text proper of the “Disticha”, with the title in Roman LIBER PRIMVS.| Catonis, which ends f. lla (closing with the3d line of the page); then LIBER SECVNDVS, ff. 11 a — 1C a (ending with the 16th line) ; LIBER TERTIVS, ff. 16 a — 20 a (ending with the 12th line) ; and LIBER QVARTVS, ff. 20a — 27b (ending at bot- tom). The running titles are, as said, in Gothic (A nnnur Bok | CatoniSy followed by Þridia Bok | Cafonts, and Fiorda Bok | Catonis. The text is, throughout the four books, arranged in unheaded paragraphs fthree in each series) thus : 1. The Cato distichs (2 to3 lines of print) in the original, printed in Italics; 2. The Icelandic alli- terative version (2 to 4 lines), printed in Gothic, orblack- letter ; 3. The Icelandic rhymed metrical translation, likewise in Gothic. Of these series there are 40 in the first book.—The second book opens with ten lines of pre- fatory matter, followed immediately by a rhymed ren- dering, after which follow 31 serics (text, alliterative version, metrical version) as heretofore described. The introduction to the third book is of six lines, and its metrical translation is succeeded by 23 series. An in- troduction of four lines opens the fourth book and after the rendering come 48 of the distichal series, the final one (bottom of f. 27b) being: Miraris verbis nudis me scribere versus; Hos brevitas sensus fecit coniungere binos. A. J., the editor and translator of these “Sayings of the Seven Sages”, being doubtlcss the lear- ned Arngrimur Jónsson, the scholastic light of the Hólar bishopric under Guöbrandur Lorláksson, although this piece is found in no list of the productions of his prolific pen.
