It is said that three fruitless years were spent in searching for them, and at length they were found on the present site of the capital, and there, in reliance upon the directing Providence, Ingolf and his little company settled. It was upon this rocky summit Ingolf desired to be buried that he might behold all his vast possessions on the last day. Here and there along the coast we could perceive the opening of a dark valley leading inland, whilst dense masses of steam told us of Krisuvik. Here, from cleft after cleft in the rocks, jets of steam are constantly issuing, with a roar like the whistle of a gigantic steam engine, and streams of hot sulphur slide greasily down the barren hill sides into hollows ; while near at hand are springs of boiling hot mud, like pitch, spluttering and splashing up into the air in jets The whole place, in fact, is as near a literal lake of fire and brimstone as this world probably shows. During our journey we had pointed out two mountain cliffs standing opposite to each other like huge, threatening castles, named the Eagle Rock and Ravenburg. At their feet the sea was one mass of foam, and it has been a place of tempests from the time when Kalman first settled here a thousand years ago He lost all his family in a storm, then moved inland, but an old writer says, “ Drowning ran in his family, and who can escape his fate ? Ask the lovely twilight, for before the floods of crimson and gold, which lit up the distant snow peaks with a rosy light, had disappeared, streaks of pale emerald green and primrose appeared— thus visible together were evening and morning, night and day, sunset and sunrise. “ And this is in the night’; most glorious night !
