Schooling and educational affairs From the start women have born the brunt of raising and educating children and adolescents. They are well aware how important a good up- bringing and education is for preserving the cul- ture, language and independence of the nation. Changes in our society have increasingly moved traditional women's jobs out into the job market. To some extent day-care centres and schools have taken over the vital role of raising the new genera- tions. Therefore, it is imperative that education and child-raising are properly supported and fi- nanced. We have good reason to be extremely worried about the future of education in this country. In the past years, the school system has been under attack instead of being built up. Teachers on all levels are fleeing the profession because of poor salaries and work overload, and seeking new jobs. Unqualified people take over, which is of course an unacceptable solution, as well as being illegal. The situation is worst outside the capital. There has to be a change of policy, and it is imperative that teacher’s work receive due recognition. The future of Iceland depends on the education of its children in decent, well equipped schools with well educated and competent teachers. 13
