Health care
Health is a precious resource which must be
protected. The prosperity of each nation is depen-
dent on the health if its people. The health care
service has become too much of an expensive re-
pair service. A greater emphasis on preventive
medicine would reduce the operational costs in
the health service.
Many illnesses can be traced to people's lifestyle
and the environment. Through education, these
can be minimized and the individuals, thus, be-
come more active in maintaining their own good
health.
Low incomes, long working hours, absence of
parents from the home and lack of day-care centers, all have caused an increase
in stress and burdens on the family. The conditions in society which are created
by the government influence the health of the family.
People should be able to choose lifestyles in accordance with official hygienic
and health standards and education. This should not depend on residential areas
or financial standing.
Health education is lacking both in schools and for the public. We need educa-
tion on the subjects of sex, veneral diseases, contraceptives, and child birth.
Tooth decay in Icelandic children occurs sooner and is more frequent than in their
peers in neighbouring countries. The increase in drug abuse among the young
should be sufficent incentive to construct preventive programs.
In the home as well as in traffic childhood accidents are more common in Ice-
land than in neighbouring countries. Similarly Icelandic seamen are more likely
to have accidents than their fellow professionals in neighbouring countries.
The health service is built to a large extent on the work of women. Here as in
other professions they are underrated and receive a low income.
