Abuse of women and children The abuse of women and children is not just the victims' problem. It is a problem for all of society. It is the coarsest and most obvious manifestation of the oppression of women. Violence in the home is a hidden problem in our society, which people are reluctant to admit to. In our neighbouring countries it has been revealed that violence in the home is more common than was once believed and occurs in all classes of so- ciety. Recently, attention here in Iceland has been drawn to child abuse. Research in other countries has shown that emotional, physical, and sexual abuse is more common than people had previously realized. The Women's Shelter in Reykjavík receives women from all over Iceland who have been victims of domestic violence. Since its foundation the shelter has re- ceived 150 women and children who have witnessed or have been victims of phys- ical abuse. Lately the availability of pornography has increased in Iceland. The porno- graphy has become harder and involves more and more violence. Pornography is based on the misuse of not only women but of children. Pornography encourages contempt for women and sexual prejudice. We know that a direct link exists be- tween pornography and the sexual abuse of women and children. 34
